It drew criticism from humourless blogs and newspapers, the Prime Minister is rumoured not to have sanctioned it, but the ‘Clarkson for PM’ video is already Number 10’s most viral video. In just five days, it’s been viewed 200,000 times on YouTube and thousands more times on No10TV.
Reportedly made in a lunchtime, the video response to a petition asking for Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson to be made the Prime Minister, has eclipsed viewing figures about more worthy subjects. A video showing Gordon Brown’s surprise visit to the British troops in Afghanistan, also added to the Number 10 YouTube channel last Tuesday, has struggled to rack up 3,000 views so far.
The worst performing video currently available, with less than 400 views since 3 July, is a film about the National School Sport Week, notable only for briefly showing the Schools Minister Ed Balls training.
Web viewers are fickle creatures however, the viral video chart harshly informs us of the Clarkson video that “this video was popular once, but it’s pretty old news now.”
