Cameron continues to back Coulson

Having had the chance to read The Guardian’s revelations about what will probably be called ‘hackgate’ or some such, David Cameron has decided that he’s backing his communication chief Andy Coulson because he believes in “giving people a second chance”.

“It’s wrong for newspapers to breach people’s privacy with no justification. That is why Andy Coulson resigned as editor of the News of the World two-and-a-half years ago,” he said.

“Of course I knew about that resignation before offering him the job. But I believe in giving people a second chance. As director of communications for the Conservatives he does an excellent job in a proper, upright way at all times.”

Fair enough ‘Dave’, that’s your judgement.

As the investigations get under way, Cameron will know that while Coulson is still in post his past knowledge of the phone tapping is going to be acutely scrutinised. Any new revelations which implicate Coulson will also now damn Cameron for a lack of judgement. That’s a big prize for the media to go after. This story will run and run.
