More than 80 groups have come forward for help to buy out their local pub since the Community-Owned Pubs Support Programme was announced in March.

But about 50 projects across England that were in line to receive cash support and other assistance now face an uphill struggle to keep their local running.

The local pub is one of the most important institutions a community can have. The majority of that community’s social lives will revolve around that local pub. The saddest thing is that once it’s gone and replaced by a block of flats it will never return. That is a permanent loss for that particular community and leads inevitably to a distancing of friends and neighbours in that community. The money that was put aside would not even have covered the school fees of Minister’s children so why the hell cut it? Believe it or not words fail me.
