When the Daily Telegraph ran their story that ‘green taxes’ on driving and flying would be raised to fund a marriage tax break if the Tories won the general election, Conservative MPs cried foul.
Nadine Dorries, Conservative MP for Mid Bedfordshire, accused The Telegraph of deceit, writing on Twitter: “George Osborne told the Telegraph that their story wasn’t true, but they went ahead with it anyway.”
Meanwhile George Osborne, in a BBC radio interview, described the Telegraph’s claim that he would increase taxes on petrol and flight tickets as “bizarre”. Unfortunately for the shadow chancellor it didn’t take long for The Telegraph to find the policy detailed on the party’s official website.
We agree with George Osborne: his policy to increase taxes for the many to fund a tax break for a few is indeed bizarre but, no matter how much Tory MPs protest, The Telegraph is correct – it is Conservative policy.
