Labour decisively wins Stevenage Council by-election

Labour’s Bruce Jackson yesterday won the by-election for the Pin Green ward, Stevenage. Mr Jackson won with 716 votes, leaving the Conservative candidate, Ralph Dimelow, well behind with 321 votes. Bruce Jackson’s election to the council follows the death of Labour’s Reg Smith in July.

A long-standing campaigner, Mr Jackson narrowly failed to beat his Conservative rival in the Longmeadow ward by just 48 votes in the local elections in May.

Labour also won a Council by-election in the Plumstead ward in Greenwich, London, Councillor Andrew Burns reports.

Luke’s Blog rounds up all yesterday’s results with the comment that there were a “bumper lot of council by-election results last night. A rather better set of results for Labour than we have been seeing recently.”
