The last opinion poll before Christmas continues to indicate increasing Labour support, though still showing a gap of 9 points between Labour and the Tories.
But the picture looks much better where real votes were cast last month, in local by-elections. Analysis of twelve by-elections in November shows Labour neck and neck with the Tories, the Local Government Chronicle reveals.
It was the “Conservatives’ worst month for years, with five seat losses”, the respected journal said.
“Analysis of 12 comparable contests this month gives them a projected nationwide lead of just 0.3% over Labour. A calculation based on eight wards fought both times by all three major parties gives a line-up of C 36.8%, Lab 32.9%, Lib Dem 20.4%.”
