In the last couple of days we have been contacted by Josh Benn, Tony Benn’s son, and Tony’s publicist at Random House asking for us to surrender the fake twitter account in Tony’s name. That’s because the fake account now has only one tweet and it’s a link to Labour Matters. It’s not illogical to assume that we created the account then, but we didn’t (and we don’t know who did).
The email exchanges have provided us with an exclusive, you read it here first, moment: The real Tony Benn has now decided to join Twitter, though he’s yet to post a tweet, and we can reveal that he’s being forced to do so under the name of @TheRealTonyBenn.
So, on behalf of Tony Benn, his family, and even his publicist, would the owner of the fake account please give it to Tony? You can contact us if you’d like more details or wish to remain anonymous.
UPDATE 16 August 2009: Tony Benn has now got control of @tonybenn and has started tweeting.
