With their largest personal political donor tried and now found guilty of fraud in his absence, the Lib Dems now face their next biggest donor leaving the Party. The Times’ Red Box blog has the story:
“Lord Jacobs, a senior figure in the party for 36 years, has ripped up his membership card and moved to the crossbenches, saying the party isn’t bold enough in these credit crunch times…
To be clear, he is quitting over policy rather than personality – and in particular Team Clegg’s failure to implement his detailed plans.
But he hints quietly he’d rather have Vince as leader and politically this resigations is still damaging. Anthony Jacobs has been a major donor and a big figure in the party – ex-treasurer, chairman of the English party, strategist and peer. He’s the sort of blue chip businessman (he made his name running the British School of Motoring) the party can’t afford to lose.”
