Lord Ashcroft quits Conservative’s campaigning role rather than pay UK tax

The deputy chairman in charge of campaigning for the Conservative Party who directed millions of pounds into their marginal seats campaign today used the pages of The Telegraph to announce that he’s quitting the role rather than pay UK tax.

Lord Ashcroft is thought to have donated £10 million to the Tories in the last decade, but continued to refuse to discuss his tax status, saying:
“When it becomes mandatory for everyone to discuss their tax affairs in public then I will be happy to do so.”

The move comes after the government recently u-turned on support for a new law banning non-UK taxpayers from bankrolling political parties.
