Gordon Brown has praised PC Bill Barker, who died today in the course of duty in the Cumbria flooding, saying, “he was a very heroic, very brave man. He will sorely missed by those who were close to him. We owe him a great debt of gratitude.”
“Our thanks go out to all the emergency services and all other agencies involved in the response who continue in their extraordinary efforts to help the people affected.”
The Prime Minister promised the Chief Constable of Cumbria, Craig Mackey, earlier today that the Government will provide “all support necessary” for flood relief, and the Environment Secretary, Hilary Benn, is already in Cumbria assessing response needs.
