Poll shows Conservative lead cut to just 1%

A ComRes poll due to be published in tomorrow’s Independent indicates that the Conservatives have only a 1% lead over Labour, an increase of 5% on the last poll. If repeated in a general election, the results would give Labour a small majority in the House of Commons. The figures are: Labour – 36; Conservative – 37; Lib Dem – 17.

The ComRes opinion poll suggests poorer voters have responded positively to the measures in the Pre Budget Report, which cut VAT to 15% and promised a new 45% top rate of income tax for those earning more than £150,000 a year.

The poll also suggests that Labour support among the lowest social group (DE) has increased by 16% to 51% since last month. Labour’s backing among C2 skilled manual workers has grown from 23% to 35%.
