Secret Conservative ‘demo on expenses’ falls flat

A demonstration secretly organised by the Conservative Party to disrupt the Prime Minister’s speech today, exposed by Paul Waugh on Friday, failed to attract enough Tories to fill a coach.

As this snap from Owain Gardner via Twitter shows, the handful of ‘Conservative Future’ protesters – despite being offered “reasonable expenses” by the Tories – were left out in the cold as Gordon Brown set out Labour’s themes for the general election, saying:

“First, we must secure the recovery, not put it at risk. Second, we must support new industries and future jobs. Third, as we reduce the deficit by half, we must protect and not cut frontline services. And fourth, we must stand up for the many not the few.”

A Labour insider joked: “The few we talk about seem to be standing outside!”
