South West voters have no confidence in Cameron say Tory MPs

Conservative MPs and candidates in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset claim that David Cameron’s failure to ’seal the deal’ with voters means the party will fail to win key target seats at the general election, according to the Western Morning News:

They talk about “hanging on” to seats, “picking up one or two” others. Don’t forget the Tories need to win an extra 10 seats in the three counties, all but one from the Lib-Dems, to secure a majority of just one.

One Tory MP told me: “There is uncertainty over Cameron in the South West, largely because our Tories tend to be a bluer shade of blue. There was over Thatcher in 1979 as well. They are yet to be convinced.”

Another MP talks of there being “no love” for the Tory leader.

One candidate, describing their seat as being on the “frontline” of the battle for power, insists they are beavering away playing up their local credentials and local issues.

They see what Mr Cameron is doing as, at best, an add-on and at worst a confirmation of voters’ fears of trendy London types airbrushing away traditional Tory values.
