In an exclusive (read: nobody else would touch it) for ‘Inside the Games’ Hugh Robertson, the Shadow Sports and Olympics spokesman, has claimed that Gordon Brown has let down Team GB over 2012 Olympic funding.
So when Mr Robertson says “Gordon Brown, as Chancellor, promised to provide £600 million in his March 2006 Budget to train Britain’s Olympic athletes for London 2012. As only £500 million has so far been received, UK Sport will have to make cuts at its board meeting on December 2 which will mean fewer athletes and fewer teams in Team GB,” we can assume that the Government hasn’t paid?
Not a bit of it, £600m was indeed promised – £500m by the Labour Government and £100 from private business. Turns out that it’s private enterprise which has failed to cough up though.
Mr Robertson obviously couldn’t face calling for more government spending, or to attack big business, so instead he attacks Gordon Brown. Pathetic!
