With the prospect of a hung parliament looking more likely after a MORI poll put the gap between Labour and the Conservatives at just 6%, Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has made it quite clear that a vote for his party at the next election could let Cameron have the keys to Number 10 even if they haven’t won enough seats in the Commons.
Rejecting notions that the Liberal Democrats would be able to negotiate concessions from either major party in the event of a hung parliament, Nick Clegg has said that his party will simply support the largest group in the Commons – a move that would put David Cameron in Downing Street, according to the latest polls.
Having declared that the Lib Dems would support whichever party won the most seats, Clegg has already thrown away the opportunity to demand a referendum on changing the voting system in return for his MP’s support – a move likely to further unsettle those on the left of his party already worried by his move to the right since becoming Lib Dem leader.
