The Labour Member of the Greater London Assembly for Brent and Harrow, Navin Shah, has asked the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to intervene and stop Brent Liberal Democrats from misusing public funds for a transport scheme that nobody wants.
The Kingsbury Road traffic scheme, which has been opposed by local residents, local councillors and even the full Council is to be rammed through by a Liberal Democrat minority on the Council’s Highways Committee using legal loopholes in the Local Government Act. The scheme is funded by money from Transport for London (TfL) but Labour argues that to use public money for a scheme which has little or no public support and has been rejected by a majority of councillors is a misuse of public funds.
Navin Shah has asked Mayor Johnson to treat the scheme as awaiting Council approval and therefore not to release TfL funding for the Lib Dems’ madcap scheme.
Labour Councillor Jim Moher (Fryent ward) who is leading the attack on behalf of local residents, said:
“The Lib Dems are pushing ahead with this scheme in the face of public opposition because somebody else is funding it but it’s all public money in the end and to use public money for something the public doesn’t want is a misuse of public money. The Lib Dems’ contempt for the public purse is almost as bad as their contempt for democracy.”
