Cornish Lib Dem infighting over council election dates

A letter sent to all Cornish newspapers:

Dear Editor,

Your article last week on the infighting among local Liberal Democrats made for a bitter-sweet read as I prepare to oppose them in upcoming local elections.

I have been told that two Lib Dem MPs withdrew their support for a press release welcoming June elections on the grounds that no formal decision on the date had yet been made. And now it seems Lib Dem councillors have been caught out fighting with each other over the matter.

I myself welcomed news that the elections might still be held in June, despite support for the delay from local Lib Dems. I was also surprised to see the Lib Dems claim the decision against a delay as a victory.

Now it is clear that they felt victorious over their own colleagues, and have ceased to care about what is best for the public.

I have been told about councillors arguing with their leadership, and briefings being given to favoured friends but denied to other councillors. Things have even got fairly personal given the accounts of conversations I’ve been offered.

But it remains bitter-sweet. Of course it is sweet to see my rivals display such incompetence and turmoil. But I cannot enjoy disarray among the people who run our local services and spend millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money each year.

Yours faithfully,

Lee Jameson
Labour Party Parliamentary Candidate for Newquay and St. Austell
