Free bus travel on Plymouth Park and Ride services under threat

The free travel bus pass for the over 60s looks likely to be withdrawn from use on Park and Ride services in Plymouth.

Bus users of the service from the George Junction and Milehouse have been told by bus staff that they may not be able to use their passes in the future. A council insider has confirmed that they are reviewing the usage of the free bus pass on Park and Ride services.

Councillors Dann and Wildy are going to ask questions at Full Council to Councillor Wigens as to why he is going to scrap the free travel on Park and Ride buses for the over 60s.

Labour introduced the free bus travel for the over 60s when it ran the council and now it appears that the Tories want to take it away by imposing these harsh restrictions.

Councillor Dann said:

“This would be a very short-sighted decision when as a council we are encouraging the maximum use of public transport. These services are very popular and well used by the over 60`s and free bus travel on P&R should not be scrapped.”

Councillor Wildy added:

“Most pensioners in my ward really appreciate the free bus passes and restricting their use only raises costs for some of the poorest in Plymouth. Many pensioners from around the city regularly use their bus pass on Park and Ride. Surely right now, the Council should encourage people to come into town, spend money in local shops and enjoy the waterfront. This won’t help at all.”
