Labour Councillors Nicky Wildy and Sue Dann have asked Plymouth City Council to set up a cross-party task force to draw on the knowledge of local community leaders, local experts and the experiences of other local councils to come up with a plan to tackle the economic downturn.
Councillor Wildy said:
“Plymouth needs a coherent and explicit approach to tackling the recession. It needs to work within its strategic long term vision to deliver real solutions and real help to its residents. Other local councils have developed a raft of measures but in Plymouth the Council has so far only had a piecemeal approach focussing on developers. This will not help the majority of residents and the Council could and should do much, much more.
“This one is above party political squabbles. The Council needs to work together – with partners and with all the common purpose it can muster – to save firms, create jobs and provide a launch pad to recapture the prosperity we have enjoyed in recent years.”
