Plymouth Conservatives are set to scrap free parking for Blue Badge holders within weeks, the Labour Party said today.
A decision by the Cabinet Member for Transport on the City Council will see all charges rise at the Theatre Royal, one of the Council’s busiest city centre car parks, but disabled drivers will see their charges go from nothing to £1.10 an hour.
Labour’s spokesperson Cllr Jean Nelder is calling on the Tories to have a change of heart. Cllr Nelder said:
“It’s the thin end of the wedge. They’ll start on this car park and it won’t be long before they abandon all free parking for the disabled all together.
“Like most local people I thought that the Conservatives had promised to keep disabled parking spaces free when they were seeking election. Now they’re in power, they’re going back on their pledge.”
