Betts launches full public consultation on Tesco Halfway plans

Clive Betts MP (Sheffield South East) today announced that, together with local Labour Councillors Isobel Bowler and David Barker, he has launched a full public consultation with local people on TESCO’s application to build a new store at Halfway.

Clive Betts said: “As local elected representatives, we were surprised when Tesco announced their planning application to build a superstore at Halfway. We are determined to ensure that local people have the maximum opportunity to have their views heard.

We have already met Tesco’s representatives and, separately, met senior Sheffield City Council planners. There are many complex issues raised by the proposal.”

Councillor Isobel Bowler said: “Local people are entitled to have as much information as possible about the planning issues for this site and the whole area, so that they can make an informed and influential response. We are writing to every local resident providing a detailed briefing and advising them how they can best make their views known.”

Councillor David Barker said: “As Chair of the local Community Assembly, I will ensure that there is a public meeting about this planning application by TESCO to enable local people to ask questions and get full answers about the complex issues which need to be considered.”

Clive Betts added: “Any elected representative who just says that they’re for or against this proposal – without having considered all the issues, or by not ensuring that local people have all the relevant information – is simply irresponsible.”

i think a tescos in halfway would be great for 2 reasons .firstly it would bring much needed jobs to the area for local people and secondly it would give local people in the area more of a choice as to were to shop because not everyone has a car

I dont really agree with above comment, the area of Halfway, Beighton, Mosbrough hardly have a lack of job opportunities with the big industrial estates and Crystal Peaks. Regarding Choice there is a Morrisons, Sainsburys, Market and a soon to be Aldi so what more choice do we need. I think this is an appaling idea, I bought my house in December 2009 and there was no idea that this could happen. Now im going to have a massive superstore in view and an increase in traffic causing more risk to the many young children in the area.

I to am strongly against yet another supermarket in the area. We already have Sainsuburys, all the food outlets Iceland etc in crystal peaks, Morrisons, Asda 15 minutes awat at Handsworth, Tescos 15 minutes away at Clowne. We dont need another supermarket.
The traffic around the Oxclose area ia already very busy particulary on a weekend, the people there didnt guy houses to wake up and open there curtains to a tescos everyday – houses prices will undoubtedly drop if this plan goes ahead.
Then theres the wildlife aspect, I know for a fact there are rare birds, badgers and a vast array of wildlife living / nesting on the proposed.

We dont need this. You can all but guarantee Tescos will be full of false enviromental friendly / traffic reducing guarantee promises – ultimately all there bothered about is making money. They dont care about what local people think.

I encourage anyone with similar thoughts as me to voice there opinion and ensure this doesnt progress further.

I am also in support of Tesco in Halfway.I support more choice.

Firts of all i dont think that it will produce much traffic becuase it will be the same customers that use morrison’s or sainsbury’s that will be going to Tesco.Secondly, there is a lot of people that go around all supermarket’s to get the best price on product’s especially the people that can’t afford a £200.00 shopping bill a week with this recession. We all know that supermarket’s all have there own special price for certain Item’s that all differ from each other so in that way the supermarket makes you think that you have saved money on a certain item but will infact have ripped you off on others! so to have a NEW TESCO would be a great saving for me personaly.Me being Italian am interested in all Italian products and I can see that they sell the most cheap quality Italian product’s in which I mean they sell product Brand’s that I have NEVER heard of in my life!and the price is shockingly expensive! So if there were to be a Tesco I would be able to buy their special offers what Morrison’s or Sainsbury’s don’t have.

I myself totally back the idea of a Tesco store being built in Halfway, although I’m not sure the location in mind is the best.

Halfway has grown in size over many years and is surrounded by large estates such as Eckington, Killamarsh, Mosborough, Beighton etc. which are villages in themselves, with Eckington and Killamarsh being the size of a small town.

On many occasions the current stores have not been able to cope with the demand in the area and many shoppers have been left reeling due to the existing stores capacity to deal with demand.

The reason I feel the currently proposed location is not the best is due to the current road capacity to handle traffic. The current Eckington Road and Rotherham Road that would feed the new store is totally insufficient for the use required now with many tail backs forming at busy times, an increase on this would literally bring traffic to a standstill.

I currently live in Killamarsh and I am fed up of having to waste fuel to either visit Clownes Tesco or drive across Sheffield to Millhouses Tesco. I would like a choice of store to shop at in the area. I think the new Aldi is a welcome addition to the area but again why place it on a road network that cannot cope now.

There is a site where the old Westfield School used to stand and there is an industrial estate at Holbrook, at least one of these locations would take some traffic away from the main road by using Moss Way and Owlthorpe Greenway and would not be in peoples back gardens.

I totally disagree with Tescos at this site. The store is too near our estate. What will happen to Heathlands ? Children will be playing on Heathlands park with traffic to and from Tescos. The wildlife, how can you dig up a piece of land and put a Tescos there without ruining the wildlife and enviroment.
I agree with the last person, it should be built on the old Westfield School site as there is more space. Please DO NOT build a Tescos here. We don’t need it.

Looks like we might get two extra supermarkets in the area (Tesco at Heathlands and Asda at Drakehouse!). nnThe problem with the Heathlands site is that if Tesco do not build on the land, Hallam Land management will sell it to a housebuilder who almost certainly WILL get planning consent (as houseing is in the SCC 15 year plan). If this happens pretty much 100% of the land will be swallowed up and built on (rather than the 57% in the Tesco application) due to the small plots and dense packing houses utilise. nnThis will look worse, and do more damage to this, the most bio-diverse area in Sheffield, and we will still end up with nearly as much traffic as we could get with Tesco. We would all like it to remain greenfield but that is not an option in the medium to long term i.e. next 5 years. nnAt least with Tesco, we will have a new neighbour who will look after the site and support the local community on an ongoing basis (admittedly while making a lot of money out of us in the process) and not just build and leave as the housebuilders will.nnThe worst part of the proposal is the bus gate which will destroy yet more greenfield land and be built right next to the entrance to the new Heathlands Park. It will also be adjacent to the new football pitch causing potential danger for both children running out onto the road and bus drivers as balls hit the buses. The recent Tesco consultation had 71% of local residents vote for no link road with only 10% wanting a bus gate and yet Sheffield City Council (SCC) have still asked for the road plans to remain. Nice to see SCC are listening in a city “where everyone matters”!nnIt will be interesting to see what our local councilors and MP have to say now the consultation is out!!nnLink to consultation document http://www.newtesco-halfway.co.uk/consultation-report/n
