Betts presses Sheffield’s World Cup case

Sheffield Attercliffe MP Clive Betts met Andy Anson, Chief Executive of England’s 2018 World Cup bid, to press Sheffield’s case.

Clive Betts said:

“I had a very productive meeting with Andy Anson, when I was able to offer Sheffield’s support and assistance for England’s 2018 World Cup bid and to promote Sheffield’s case for being part of the bid.”

Anson is planning to convince the FIFA executive committee, which will select the host in December 2010, that England would be the most successful country in luring fans from across the globe in 2018. He believes that the depth and the passion of football fans in England sets us apart and would ensure stadiums were packed for every match.

Andy Anson said:

“We have a very attractive commercial market in England and anyone who understands the broadcast and sponsorship market will understand that we have a very attractive proposition to put to FIFA.”

Clive Betts met Andy Anson after he had played in the annual Parliamentary Labour Party v The Press Football Match, held at the Withdean Stadium, Brighton.

After expressing disappointment at his team’s 5-1 thrashing, Clive Betts said:

“Andy Anson told me he was delighted with Sheffield’s support for the bid. He knows full well Sheffield’s place in the history of the game, the quality of our stadiums – and planned improvements – and the commitment of our fans. He very much welcomed my personal offer of assistance to promote England’s and Sheffield’s case through my international parliamentary and football networks.”
