Paul Blomfield, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sheffield Central, today this week met with Transport Secretary Lord Adonis, following his announcement that Sheffield railway station will be one of only ten stations across the country to receive major investment to create a new cycling hub.
Paul Blomfield met with Lord Adonis at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton and welcomed Labour’s new £14 million investment into cycling. Paul Blomfield called on Lord Adonis to use some of the new investment to keep Sheffield station footbridge open.
Paul Blomfield said:
“Labour’s new investment in cycling is great news for Sheffield. A new cycling hub at Sheffield station will be another step towards our station becoming a transport interchange for the 21st century. It already connects and integrates trains, trams, buses, and now cycling will be given a strong role. This makes it doubly important that the station footbridge stays open, so that there is a proper link between all forms of transport at the station interchange and that we maintain pedestrian access through the station.
“I’m really pleased Lord Adonis was so keen to discuss the issue of keeping the footbridge open with me. Maintaining good transport links will be vital to ensuring that the cycling hub works which is why I’m calling on him to use some of the new cycling funding to ensure the bridge stays open. We need to maintain a safe and open route through our station and make sure that the different forms of transport Sheffielders use every day to get around remain connected and accessible.”
