Blomfield welcomes new council house building investment

Paul Blomfield, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sheffield Central, has welcomed today’s announcement by Housing Minister John Healey of over £2 million to build new council houses in Sheffield.

The Housing Minister has announced new funding of £122.6 million to be shared between 73 councils in England, including Sheffield. Councils will match the Government’s grant, bringing total public investment in the council house building programme to over £500m to build more than 4,000 new council homes for 8,000 people.

Sheffield will receive £2,146,572 to build 27 new homes. Labour understands that 19 of the homes will be built at Ellesmere and 8 will be built at a site at Chaucer. Nearly half of the new homes will be much-needed family homes with three and four bedrooms.

Paul Blomfield said:

“This is great news for Sheffield. We need a lot more affordable homes to rent so I’m delighted by the new investment in council house building. I hope these new homes are the first step towards many more council homes.

“The new investment is also a real boost for Sheffield’s local economy because the Council will be required to offer new construction jobs and apprenticeships to local people. Not only will the investment lead to new homes being built, it’ll create new jobs and skills for the future.”
