Clive Betts MP welcomes ALDI decision

Clive Betts MP has welcomed the decision of Sheffield City Council’s Planning Board to turn down a planning application by ALDI to build a store at Drakehouse Lane. Both Clive Betts and local Councillor Helen Mirfin-Boukouris attended the Planning Board and spoke against the application.

Clive Betts said: “I’m delighted that the Planning Board rejected the proposal to build an ALDI store at Drakehouse Lane. This was the wrong site. In particular, I believe that the Planning Board recognised that the parking proposals were totally inadequate and that the additional traffic that would be generated would simply add to the local congestion.”

Councillor Helen Mirfin-Boukouris added: “The overwhelming majority of local residents were against this proposal for this site. However, I believe that the majority – and that includes me – would like to see an ALDI store in the Crystal Peaks area. That’s why I’ll be working hard with all interested parties to try to find a way that this can happen within the Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre but without using the Damon’s restaurant site and without over-development of the western end of the shopping Centre.”
