Labour welcomes Sheffield’s inclusion as a 2018 World Cup bid city

Paul Blomfield, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sheffield Central, has welcomed today’s announcement by the Football Association that Sheffield will be included as one of the host cities in England’s final 2018 bid. Paul, who is a life-long Sheffield United fan and season-ticket holder at Bramall Lane, said “Football’s coming home!”

Sheffield has been selected to be one of England’s host cities alongside London, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham. The final decision about which country will host the 2018 World Cup will be made by FIFA, football’s governing body, in December 2010.

Paul Blomfield said:

“What a fantastic result for Sheffield, football’s coming home! As a Sheffield United fan I’m naturally disappointed that Bramall Lane hasn’t been picked, however I’m really pleased that World Cup football will hopefully be coming to our city. Now we just need to keep our fingers crossed that FIFA make the right decision next year and gives the 2018 World Cup to England.

“Congratulations to everyone who backed Sheffield’s bid. The bid showed the best of Sheffield with United and Wednesday working together for the good of the city. We have some of the most passionate football fans in England and our city has an unmatchable football heritage. Sheffield is the home of the modern game, Sheffield FC is the oldest club in the world, and we hosted matches during the victorious 1966 World Cup. So let’s hope today’s announcement is a positive omen for English success in 2018.”
