Paul Blomfield, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sheffield Central, has signed a giant Christmas card to David Cameron calling on him to scrap his pledge to pull Britain out of the European Social Chapter which would have a devastating impact on British workers. Britain joined the European Social Chapter in 1997 thanks to the Labour Government. Under the Tory plans British workers would lose employment rights that workers in every European country currently enjoy including the right to 4 weeks paid holidays, an entitlement to maternity and paternity leave and protection if workers lose their jobs.
Paul Blomfield said: “David Cameron’s anti-workers pledge is just more evidence that the Tories have all the wrong answers for Sheffield and for Britain. Just as people are preparing to take paid time off work this Christmas, the Tories are showing themselves to have the same old anti-workers attitude that they had under Thatcher. I think it’s a disgrace that David Cameron wants to scrap workers’ rights to 4 weeks paid holidays, an entitlement to maternity and paternity leave and remove protection for workers who lose their jobs. Cameron cares about workers rights as much as Scrooge and should drop this pledge!”
