Paul Blomfield welcomes Treasury aid to British car industry

Paul Blomfield, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sheffield Central, has welcomed today’s announcement by the government that financial help is being made available to the British car industry. Mr Blomfield said he hoped this would prevent local jobs in Sheffield and South Yorkshire in the car manufacturing industry and its supply chain being lost

He also said that following the announcement of job losses at Corus, the steel industry must be given all possible help by the government to prevent further job losses.

Paul Blomfield said:

“This announcement will free up much-needed credit and loans for our car industry. The car industry is suffering more than most and so I hope this will prevent local jobs being lost. We will need a strong manufacturing sector for the upturn and this help will allow our car industry to build for the future and become greener and stronger.”

Paul added:

“Now that help is being provided to the car industry, I want to see extra help given to the steel industry in this difficult period because struggling steel companies also need access to credit. The government’s help for retraining workers who have lost their jobs at Corus is welcome, but further help is needed to prevent any further local job losses in our steel manufacturing sector.”
