Sheffield Labour call for cheaper bus fares

Sheffield bus faresThe average cost of fuel has plummeted recently with diesel dropping to less than £1 per litre at some pumps, for the first time in over a year.

In light of this, Labour has called for bus companies in Sheffield to reduce their fares and pass on savings to hard-hit bus users during these difficult times. A swift decision on this issue would also help the economy in the run up to Christmas.

This is part of Labour’s new package of ideas to combat effects of the global credit crunch in Sheffield.

Councillor Bryan Lodge, Labour Transport Spokesperson, said:

“Recent rises in bus fares have been justified due to the hike in the price of fuel across the world. But fuel prices are now falling rapidly and bus operators in Sheffield will be making significant savings. This is in contrast to most people in the city suffering increased hardship due to the credit crisis; even more so with Christmas on the horizon.”

“Therefore surely it’s only fair that the bus operators pass their significant savings on to their customers. Reduced bus fares would not only help cash-strapped commuters but also city centre business, especially in this important run-up to Christmas.”

“Labour is urging the bus companies to pass on their savings to customers in time for Christmas.”
