Sheffield Labour Group is calling for cross-party support within the Council to promote a greater celebration of St George’s Day and hopes that this will inspire a variety of celebrations across the city.
The proposal will be discussed at a meeting of the Council on 4th February.
Labour Leader Jan Wilson said:
“St George’s Day never seems to be celebrated with as much gusto as St David’s Day in Wales, St Andrew’s Day in Scotland and certainly not as much as St Patrick’s Day.”
Jan added:
“But here in Sheffield we want to buck the trend and really get behind St George’s Day and give people the opportunity to show their pride in their country and celebrate their heritage. What better way to do this than giving St George’s Day the full support of Sheffield City Council.
“We’ll be asking the Leader of the Council and the Lord Mayor to work together with cross-party support to take this forward and ensure that St George’s Day is given the recognition it deserves in Sheffield.”
