Lib Dem councillors who recently voted to cut library opening times at both Broomhill Library and Highfield Library have been exposed as hypocrites.
The Lib Dems in the Broomhill, Central and Nether Edge Area Panel bulldozed the library cuts through in spite of community opposition, including a petition signed by hundreds.
However, Sheffield Labour can reveal that the national Lib Dem spokesperson for Culture, Media and Sport, Don Foster has recently made announcements accusing the Government of cutting library services!
Labour Leader Jan Wilson said:
“The hypocrisy of the Lib Dems is unbelievable. At national level they’re trying to score cheap political points, implying that the Government is neglecting libraries. When in fact in Sheffield the Lib Dem Council are cutting library services!
“After the Lib Dems decided to cut services at both Broomhill and Highfield libraries, despite widespread opposition from local people, Deputy Leader David Baker had the cheek to tell the Star that this was local democracy in action; a Lib Dem dictatorship more like.
“I wonder what we can expect from the Lib Dems in these new community assemblies that they are proposing. I sincerely hope this isn’t the beginning of more cuts to services, ploughed through by the Lib Dems in the guise of local democracy.”
