Sheffield’s Paul Blomfield welcomes decision to reject Tesco at Commonside

Paul Blomfield, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sheffield Central, has welcomed the recent decision by Sheffield Council’s North West Planning Board to refuse planning application to Tesco to build a Tesco Express at Commonside. Mr Blomfield had submitted a formal letter of objection to the application.

Paul Blomfield said:

“The decision to reject Tesco is a real victory for people power. 2000 local people objected through the planning process and I’m delighted the Planning Board has listened to them and made the right decision.

“Local shops need all the support they can get in this tough economic climate and today’s rejection is a real boost for them and for the local area. The extra traffic would have choked Commonside which is already a busy five-way junction. Huge delivery lorries coming and going throughout the day would have caused long tail-backs and increased parking problems and the risk of accidents for pedestrians in the area.

“Hopefully now Tesco will get the message once and for all that this site is inappropriate for another of their shops.”
