Viv Nicholson, a Sheffield Labour Party member and activist for over 50 years, was today presented with a Labour Party Merit Award at the Party’s Annual Conference in Brighton for her long-standing service to the Labour Party. The award, one of just two awards given at the Conference, was presented to Viv by the Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Labour’s Deputy Leader Harriet Harman.
Among many roles in the city and the Labour Party, Viv Nicholson has been Richard Caborn’s parliamentary agent for the last 26 years and Richard today paid a warm tribute to her.
Richard Caborn said:
“Viv has been my agent for 26 years. Besides being my agent and a very good friend, she has always applied the principles of the Labour Party to everything she has done which is why she is so well respected.
“Viv has nearly single-handedly returned me at consecutive General Elections, and has always said it was far easier to run the election campaign when I wasn’t around! She is a stalwart Labour supporter and has served in many positions as a Party activist, most recently as Secretary of the District Labour Party. As a senior Sheffield Councillor, she was Chair of the Education and Leisure Committees, and served as Deputy Lord Mayor. She has also contributed enormously to our city by serving on a wide range of public bodies including Sheffield College, Sheffield City Trust and the Yorkshire and Humberside Arts Board.
“Viv has always taken the principles of the Labour Party deep into the heart of the community and always practices what she preaches. She has been a first class organiser and confidante to many who have passed through Sheffield Labour Party in the past quarter of a century.
“We owe her and Mike, her husband and her family a great debt of gratitude for what they have done for the Labour Party and the Trade Union movement over many years.”
Viv Nicholson said:
“I’m so proud to have been recognised with this award. I’ve enjoyed every minute of my involvement in the Labour Party, and I’ve seen the difference we can make to people’s lives. It’s been great working with Richard, and I’m looking forward to working with Paul Blomfield as our next MP.”
