While Sheffield’s Lib Dems cut hours, Labour opens library longer

Labour’s Burngreave Area Panel recently extended opening hours at a local library. Burngreave Library will now operate three hours longer; opening up half an hour earlier and closing two and a half hours later on Saturday’s. The new times will be in place from next month.

However, there does seem to be a postcode lottery with Local Area Panels, as residents living in parts of the city with a Lib Dem Area Panel know only too well. People in areas served by the Lib Dem run Broomhill, Central and Nether Edge Local Area Panel recently had library opening hours reduced at two libraries: Broomhill and Highfield.

Local Labour Councillor and Area Panel Chair, Jackie Drayton, said:

“This really does show how better off people are under Labour. Libraries are an important service, appreciated by all people, especially in Burngreave, and the Labour Councillors recognise this. It’s a shame that the Lib Dems don’t realise that their areas need them too!”

“Burngreave Library is well used, especially on Saturdays, but we want even more people to use it. These new opening hours will give people an even better chance to pop into their local library and use the range of resources available.”

Jackie added:

“On the one hand you have the Lib Dems closing libraries earlier and on the other you can see Labour opening libraries for longer hours; I know which option most people would prefer.”
