Gareth Gould, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for South Holland & The Deepings, sent his petition to protect local Sure Start Children’s Centres to Conservative MP John Hayes on Saturday.
Having collected signatures of residents close to the Sure Start Centres at Banks Avenue, Spalding, and Willoughby Avenue, Market Deeping, and in Holbeach & Spalding town centres in recent weeks, Mr. Gould is highlighting the threat posed to the centres by potential Tory cuts of £200 million to the national Sure Start budget.
“That means closure for one in five Children’s Centres across the country – 10 in Lincolnshire, one in South Holland & The Deepings.
“Talking to local people, I know how much these vital community services mean to them. I have seen for myself the fantastic range of support they offer to children and their parents from all sections of the community – from help with parental IT and financial skills to toddlers’ groups.
“This issue really resonates with local people and their concerns to give their children the best life chances – and I’m asking local MP John Hayes, one of his Party’s skills spokespeople, to be clear and up front with his constituents about which one of the Children’s Centres would fall under the Tory axe if ever they came to power, and to say whether he agrees or disagrees with David Cameron over this issue.
“If you haven’t been able to sign the petition, please register your support by writing to Mr. Hayes at the House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA to say ‘No’ to Tory cuts to our children’s centres – now benefiting 2.4 million families with almost 3500 throughout the country.”
