Dr Alan Whitehead, MP for Southampton Test, will be speaking at a rally opposing the part-privatisation of the Royal Mail this Saturday in Southampton.
The rally, organised jointly by Compass and the CWU, will go from 2pm – 3.30pm, and will be held at the Friends Meeting House, 1a Ordnance Road, SO15 2AZ.
Journalists, photographers and members of the public are all welcome.
Dr Whitehead said:
“The Royal Mail does face genuine challenges, largely due to the deficit in its pension fund. However privatisation does not provide an answer to these problems or the Royal Mail’s overall future.
“A privatised Royal Mail would inevitably fragment into differentially priced services as cherry picking of service routes took place.
“I will be meeting with CWU members and members of the public on Saturday to talk about how we can protect the public ownership of the Royal Mail, while also addressing the real challenges faced by the service to ensure its long term future remains viable.”
