John Denham, Labour MP for Southampton Itchen, has welcomed the announcement from Marks and Spencer that it is to donate £25,000 to the Groundwork organisation for use at Thornhill Park Playground. The money has been raised from the charge that Marks and Spencer now makes for carrier bags in its food departments as a means of reducing their use.
John Denham said:
“This is a great initiative. Not only do we end up with fewer carrier bags in landfill sites but children in my constituency will benefit with new facilities in their playground.”
The project will transform the site by working with the local community and encouraging as many people as possible to get involved with the project. The park will include new play facilities and seating areas which will all be made from recycled materials.
Groundwork is an organisation that supports communities in need, working with partners to help improve the quality of people’s lives, their prospects and potential and the places where they live, work and play.
