John Denham, Labour MP for Southampton Itchen, has welcomed news that Bitterne Police station will be retained.
This follows Hampshire Constabulary’s review of its estate, including its police station. During these tough times where our police are forces are facing 20% cuts from the Conservative-led Government, it is good news that Bitterne will be saved from the axe.
Police forces across the country are having to make increasingly difficult decisions because the Government is making 20% cuts. Chief Constables from every corner of the UK have been saying that this is too much and Labour agrees.
Mr Denham said: “It’s a fact that police on the streets make a huge difference to our communities. Bitterne Police Station is the only station on the eastern side of the city, so it’s good news we will be keeping it.
“The bad news is that this Conservative-led Government still plans to make huge cuts to our police. Frontline services are at threat under the Tories and I’m keeping a close eye on what might face the axe next.”
