New money to help secure the recovery in your area

John Denham announces £50million to help local economies.

Southampton City Council is one of the councils benefiting from £50million intended to help make strides towards economic recovery in their local area. This new money was announced by Itchen MP, and Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, John Denham earlier this week.

This Government funding is from the Local Authority Business Growth Incentives (LABGI) scheme, given to all councils for promoting economic growth. It can be used to help small and new businesses in hard hit areas to get through the tougher times so they can hit the ground running as economic growth picks up. This vital public sector support at this time can lessen the impact for struggling families and businesses.

Mr Denham said: “The Labour’s Government’s top priority is building the economic recovery, promoting growth and jobs and cutting unemployment while rebuilding the public finances.

“This money helps all councils put money into their local economies to help build the upturn.

“The Tories have no strategy for growth or helping people during difficult times. They were wrong a year ago on the economy and are wrong today. Instead of supporting communities they would have slashed services this year and the next.”

Full details of this new funding is available from the Communities and Local Government website at http://www.communities.gov.uk/localgovernment/localgovernmentfinance/labgi/labgischeme2/
