Southampton Conservative candidates hedge their bets

Voters angry at Tory MP hopefuls standing for the Council too.

Voters have begun to realise that, on May 6th, Conservative candidates Royston Smith and Jeremy Moulton are both standing for election to the City Council as well as to Parliament.

Harefield resident Barbara Holdup said: “I find it insulting. We deserve councillors and MPs who take their job seriously. Does Royston Smith think he could do both? Or would he simply ditch the council job if he was elected as an MP? That would mean the council would have to run an extra election, wouldn’t it?”

Freemantle voter David Griffiths also surprised, she said: “It doesn’t show much dedication from Jeremy Moulton, does it? I would have thought that standing for election to Parliament was important enough in its own right, without standing for the council at the same time.”
