Andy Burnham MP, Labour’s Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, responding to David Cameron’s press conference today, said:
“This is a typical Cameron con – planning for today’s headlines instead of the future of the BBC.
“If David Cameron really wants to help families he should back our cut of £5 a week off the average household VAT bill.
“If he is serious about being ‘frank and honest’ then he needs to tell people exactly where the £5 billion of cuts that he has promised would fall and which public services he would cut.”
On the issue of the BBC he added:
“Anybody who claims to support an independent BBC and the principle of the licence fee would not make it a political football in this way.
“The BBC Trust has a duty to keep the BBC’s funding needs under review and I have already spoken to the BBC Trust and have been assured they have this under review.”
