Caroline Flint MP, Labour’s Minister for Europe, commenting on David Cameron’s absence from the European People’s Party congress in Poland and William Hague’s comments on the Lisbon Treaty, said:
“This is further proof that David Cameron is completely on his own in Europe. By scrapping his alliances with centre-right European leaders and ruling himself out of attending future meetings of mainstream European politicians David Cameron is, in the words of his own MEP, ‘choosing isolation’.
“What’s more, William Hague’s plans for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, even if it has been brought into force, would put the Tories in the extraordinary position of repudiating international law and would leave Britain facing possible withdrawal from the EU.
“The Conservatives’ dangerous excuse for a foreign policy would have a massive cost to British business and British families and would put Britain’s prosperity and standing in the world at risk.
“David Cameron needs to choose – between continuing to pander to the Euro-sceptic fringes of his party or putting the interests of the country first.”
