George Osborne misleads over school cuts

Responding to George Osborne’s BBC interview, Labour’s Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liam Byrne MP told Labour Matters:

“What is clear from tonight’s interview is that George Osborne will say anything to distract attention from the fact that he would cut SureStart and cut schools spending.

“It is utterly misleading for Osborne to claim that the Prime Minister prevented the Tories getting information. The Prime Minister agreed the process to allow the Shadow Cabinet to meet with senior cabinet officials but he has played no part in and received no report of any of those meetings.

“Frankly, George Osborne should apologise for what is an utterly misleading allegation. If the Shadow Chancellor still claims he does not have enough information to set out cuts I’ll personally send him a copy of the budget tonight so that he can see exactly what our spending plans are for this year and next year.

“The fact is that George Osborne has already decided which budgets he wants to cut and he could set those cuts out tomorrow.”
