Gordon Brown MP, Leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister, will this week set out what he sees as Labour’s governing purpose for the next five years. The last Labour Party Annual Conference before a General Election will see Cabinet Ministers each day setting out the choice voters face at the next election.
This will culminate in the publication of The Choice for Britain, which will be officially launched at the close of Labour Party Conference. It is a framework for policy debate leading up to the next manifesto, and underlines that the next election will not be a referendum on the Government but rather a choice: of Labour’s programme to help the many, verses the Tories’ agenda to cut people adrift.
Writing in the Foreword, Gordon Brown will say:
“We are fighting for a better future for our country. In the next election campaign, the choices will be starker than ever. To win the fight, we must not only defend our record and achievements: we must show how we are driving forward to meet new challenges.
“Labour is setting out a comprehensive policy agenda for the future demonstrating that progressive ideas offer solutions to the major challenges that are transforming our world.
“We are setting out plans for a post-crisis economy. We are setting out plans for a post-crisis society. And we are also setting out plans for a post-crisis politics – showing how we intend to reform our democratic institutions, rebuilding trust in politics and public life.
“We best meet the challenges of the age by holding firm to Labour’s core beliefs:
* Fighting for the interests of hard-working people and their families resolutely in the centre-ground of British politics.
* Meeting the challenges of the future by forging a new partnership between citizen and government.
* Standing up for economic realism, facing up to hard facts and common sense, for investment and reform.
* Governing for the whole country in the national interest.
* Being the rock of stability and security on which people can stand.
“On our journey so far we have overcome great challenges, but the challenges that now face us are greater still. Our task is to show not just what has been done but what can be done: to set our case for the next Labour Government – the first of the new economic era.
“By 2015, we want our country to be fairer, greener, more prosperous and democratic. A new Labour Government based on our enduring mission to offer everyone, not just the privileged few, the chance to succeed.
“We know this will be the fight of our lives. But we will fight hard because this election is about everything we care about – fairness and responsibility.”
