Gordon Brown’s resignation email to Labour members

This is the text of the email from Gordon Brown, sent to members earlier today, in which he sets out his reasons for resigning as Leader of the Labour Party:

I wanted to explain to you the decision I have taken today.

I have said since Friday that it is crucial that this country, which I love so dearly, has a principled and strong government that can meet the challenge of securing the recovery and changing our politics.

As we know, the Liberal Democrats felt that they should first talk to the Conservative Party. Mr Clegg has just informed me this afternoon that he intends to continue those discussions and now wants to open up formal discussions with the Labour Party. I think it is sensible that we respond positively.

It is clear to me that there is a progressive majority in Britain and I believe it could be in the interests of the whole country to form a progressive coalition government. If the national interest can be served by such a coalition then I should discharge the duty to form that government.

But I have no desire to stay in my position longer than is needed to ensure that the path to progress is assured. The reason we have a hung Parliament is that no single party and no single leader was able to win the full support of the country. As the leader of this great party, I must accept that is a judgement on me.

Therefore I intend to ask the Labour Party to set in train the process needed for a leadership election. I would hope for a leader to be in place by Labour Party conference. I will play no part in that contest and will back no individual candidate.

Once again can I thank you for your unstinting help and committment to this wonderful party. Sarah and I appreciate the kindness you have shown us over the years.

I will of course stay in contact with you over the coming weeks and months.

Yours sincerely

Gordon Brown

    Gordon

I am a bit of a Tory who voted Lib Dem this time around. However I want to say a huge thank you for taking this country through a phenomenally difficult period in our history. We’re a bit screwed but not as screwed as we might have been. It wasn’t your fault and over time people will see that.
    Have a nice break!
    Love Tammy

thank you for everything you have done and wish you were still here

I very much regret voting tactically for the Lib Dems in Canterbury and will know better next time as my family background is socialist

Have a good rest and best wishes to Sarah and the boys. My 92 year old aunt is by little loch Broom and we love our visits there.

    Yours Jane

    Dear Mr Brown,
I am an 18 year old first time voter. I voted Liberal Democrats, the party with which I am more politically aligned. But I recognise the service you have done for our country over the last 3 years, and the heart with which you have done it. Your determination, expressed through rousing speeches, yet willingness to concede your mistakes has put a human face on and rejuvenated politics for the next generation. Thank you and good luck

I just want to thank all the labour members for their hard work and support over the past 13 years. I am honored to have a group of dedicated members who have provided the best support possible for their citizens; and made some effective decisions all the way.

I particularly want to thank Tony Blair for the emphaisis on education, and personally believe that it would have been hard for someone from my background to get an access to such a competitive and conservative field, without his rules.

With regards to Gordon Brown, I have nothing but so much respect for you. particularly admire your wisdom and courage. You have offered so much to people from the low backgrounds and I truely believed you wanted to do much more, but your time was shortened. I only wish that you smiled much more, as during the election period I finally discovered what a beautiful smile you have and how cute it lights your face.

God Bless you and your beautiful family.

    Dear Gordon,
It’s very hard trying to contact you, so I do hope this reaches you.I have e.mailed you before when in office mentioning the feelings -on the street- so to speak, and thanking you for all the much appreciated help you have given to pensioners.I did say in my last mail that the election would be won on immigration issues, and it was.I was devastated when you lost..all be it by the smallest of margins…that must tell you something.Obviously there are so many people who think extremely highly of you.I want to thank you so very much for being so kind to me and other pensioners, I cannot imagine this lot doing the same for us as you did.As for Cleggy…well he reminds me of a wheeler and dealer from wall st.My heart went out to your lovely wife when you gave your goodbye speech, in fact I shed a tear or two…hang on to that one Gordon..she’s a genuinely lovely girl who adores you. There is something that worries the life out of me with this lot in now..not one of them has the financial brain that you have..dread to think.Good luck to you and your family and once again thankyou.xx

This is the song ‘Gordon Brown be my Angel’ – after the resignation there’s still the tax burden of 114639 MILLION pounds per year because 4% of the population are sociopathic with no hope for rehabilitation.

    Brahms Lullaby

    Gordon Brown! Gordon Brown!
    Will you be my angel?
Guardian angel is what I meant
    Will you rescue my soul?

    For you are in charge
Of these people I wrote to
    Stephen Timms, Jack Straw
Let me place my trust in you

    Gordon Brown! MP’s!
    Let me sing out loud
For what you do, for my country
    For my reproductive system

You right wrongs! My right’s been wronged
    I am desperate for you
Not just you! There’s Jon Herring
    I’m a violated woman

    Gordon Brown, help me sleep!
Help me sleep like a baby
Will my babies ever come out?
    Maternal desires!
    I lost my womanhood
    In a sinister curse
    Gordon Brown! Bring it back!
    You are perfect for that!
