Hundreds of Labour women meet at Labour Women’s conference

More than 500 women will meet at Labour Women’s Conference to discuss what women want and to demand action from the Government to stop women bearing the brunt of government cuts.

Labour women are coming together at a crucial time to discuss the fact that women are being hit twice as hard as men by the tax and welfare changes being brought in by this Government. Changes to women’s pension age and cuts in childcare, tax credits, child benefits, and other support being axed are making the lives of women of all ages harder.

Ed Miliband MP, Leader of the Labour Party, Harriet Harman MP, Labour’s Deputy Leader and Yvette Cooper MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, will be at the conference and listening to women who are attending from all parts of the country.

Harriet Harman said: “The Labour Party has pressed for equality – but women are still not equal. We are not equal at work, we are not equal at home and we are still not equally represented in politics. But Labour women are changing things. We are coming together as Labour women at a crucial time. Building on the success of last year’s women’s summit in Manchester and speaking up for women in the Labour Party and in the country.”

Yvette Cooper said: “Women are being hit hardest by the Tory-led Government’s policies. From mothers struggling with childcare costs to women in their fifties seeing their retirement plans ripped up, there is a quiet crisis facing millions of women as a result of decisions this Government has made. We’ve seen time and again that David Cameron has a blind spot on women.

“That’s why it’s important so many Labour women will be coming together from across the country this weekend. If we don’t want to see the clock rolled back on women’s equality, women need to stand together and make their voices heard.”

The Labour Party Women’s Conference will run over two days and will include women from all parts of the country.
