Yvette Cooper MP, Labour’s Chief Secretary to the Treasury, has written to George Osborne to establish whether the Tories support Labour’s extra help for business and the unemployed through the downturn. James Purnell MP, Labour’s Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, has also written to Theresa May.
For months the Tories have proudly boasted of their ill-advised opposition to fiscal stimulus. But during the Budget debate, Theresa May and Kenneth Clarke both said they welcomed measures, which are funded by additional borrowing to support the economy.
Yvette Cooper said:
“It’s time for the Tories to be straight with voters. They can’t say they support our extra help for businesses and people but oppose the funding to pay for it.
“Labour will not repeat the mistakes of the 80s and 90s. We will not turn our backs on people in difficulty. The Tories’ policy would make the recession longer, deeper and cost us all more in the long run.”
