Labour MPs to start Tweeting

The Labour Party is today launching a system to integrate Labour MPs’ websites with Twitter and Facebook. The initiative will help our MPs communicate with their constituents, wherever they are and in a way that they want.

The new system will mean that whenever MPs add content to their website it will offer them the option to Tweet about it on Twitter and update their status on Facebook.

Labour MPs can add sections to their website showing their latest Tweets, their Twitter followers, their Facebook status, the groups they belong to and their Facebook friends.

A guide will be distributed to MPs this week on how best to use these social media websites to engage with constituents.

Tom Watson MP, said:

“This is a great initiative that will make it easier for Labour MPs to engage with their constituents online.

“Labour MPs will be able to update their constituents on what they are doing on a regular basis through Twitter and Facebook.

“It will help our MPs communicate with local people where they are and in a way that people want.”

The technology has has been created by Tangent One.

Greg Jackson, Tangent One’s CEO, said:

“Twitter has grown tenfold in the last year and actually has higher penetration in the UK than the US.

“With twitterers like Stephen Fry and Barack Obama using it as a serious engagement tool it has gained enormous prominence, so it’s offering a real opportunity for all MPs to enhance their dialogue with constituents.”
