The Labour Party has set up a General Election Development Board to help fundraising for the election campaign, to be chaired by the Rt Hon David Blunkett MP.
In addition, the Labour Party will be launching a new internet fundraising drive in the New Year.
These efforts supplement the existing party initiatives and activities. They also come after a number of donations were received by the Party in support of Labour’s General Election preparations. These include contributions of £1million from Lord Sainsbury and Nigel Doughty and £250,000 from Sir Ronald Cohen.
David Blunkett MP said today:
“We all know that there will be a General Election within the next 6 months and we want to ensure that we are in the best position to support our excellent set of candidates.
“The Labour Party is ready for this election battle, we have a dedicated and passionate team working hard across the country to secure the resources which will go a long way in supporting our candidates.
“We know that those with a vested interest in the election of a Conservative Government are pumping money into the Tory coffers.
“Our job is to ensure that the voice of the people, not just those with the power of privilege is heard through to polling day.”
Ray Collins, General Secretary of the Labour Party, said:
“I would like to thank our donors and supporters for their steadfast support and commitment. The Labour Party’s supporters and donors are its life-blood, and we are very grateful for all their continued support.
“I would also like to thank David Blunkett and all those supporting the work of the General Election Development Board that together with the Board of Assistant Treasurers are making a real difference to our fundraising efforts. Every penny of these gifts and the money raised by these efforts will help support Labour candidates across the country in 2010.”
