Ann Jones AM wears white ribbon to end violence against women

Ann Jones AM today supported the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women by joining millions worldwide in wearing the symbolic White Ribbon.

White Ribbon Day commemorates the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This day has been held annually since 1991 to urge men to speak out against violence against women.

In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly declared November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the White Ribbon has become the symbol for the day.

Ann Jones AM said:

“The research published this week by the NSPCC should act as a wake up call to us all. We cannot allow young people to grow up in abusive relationships from just 13 in some cases.

“This is a hidden crime within many households so it is vital that White Ribbon Day is something that men everywhere support to raise awareness wherever possible. I also believe that local authorities should do more to reach out to women who need help via the every day services they provide and am keen to discuss this with Denbighshire County Council.

“According to last year’s British Crime Survey, domestic abuse accounted for 16% of all reported incidents of violent crime and when you consider all the incidents that go unreported it’s clear we still have a mountain to climb.

“I am proud that the Women’s Centre in Rhyl offers effective support to vulnerable women in the Vale of Clwyd and am pleased that the Labour-led Assembly Government has put its money where its mouth is recently with further funding.”
